When a Building Wants to Be Remembered
Most façade decisions are about performance and value. A few are also about identity — a building that is meant to be a landmark, that the owner wants people to remember and that should still look deliberate in forty years. That is the conversation where zinc and copper belong. They are the premium end of the metal-façade family, and they are chosen as much for what they say about a building as for what they do.
This article is for the client weighing that decision honestly: what these metals actually offer, what they genuinely cost, and where a simpler coated panel would serve the building better.
What Makes Zinc and Copper Different
Most metal cladding in Ghana is a coated product — an aluminium or steel face with a PVDF or polyester paint finish in a fixed colour. It is fine, and it is the right answer for a great many buildings. Zinc and copper are a different proposition entirely.
They are the metal, not a coating on it
A standing-seam zinc or copper façade is solid metal, formed into interlocking panels. There is no paint film to chalk, fade or peel, because the colour is the metal itself.
They patina — on purpose
This is the defining feature, and it is the thing to understand before you commit. Zinc weathers to a soft matt grey-blue; copper moves through brown to its familiar green over years. This is not corrosion eating the material — it is a stable surface layer the metal forms naturally, and it is the look you are buying. A patina-ageing façade is a deliberate architectural statement, not a maintenance problem. If you want a colour that never changes, this is the wrong material and an honest specifier will tell you so.
They last a very long time
A correctly installed standing-seam metal façade has one of the longest service lives in the cladding family, with very little maintenance. On a signature or heritage-influenced building, that longevity is much of the point.

The Honest Cost Picture
We will not dress this up. Zinc and copper are the premium end of the metal family on both counts that matter:
- Material cost — the metals themselves are dearer than coated aluminium or steel, and copper in particular tracks a real commodity price.
- Installation cost — standing-seam work is skilled craft. The seaming, the setting-out and the detailing demand experienced installers, and that labour is part of the price.
What balances that is the service life and the near-absence of maintenance. A coated panel may be re-coated or replaced within the life of a building; a properly installed zinc or copper façade is very unlikely to be. Over decades, on the right building, the value case is strong — but it is a value case, not a low up-front number, and we would rather you went in knowing that.
Where Metal Earns Its Place — and Where It Does Not
Zinc and copper suit a specific kind of project:
- Signature and landmark buildings where architectural identity justifies the spend
- Heritage-influenced and cultural buildings where a living, ageing surface fits the brief
- Roofs and façades treated as one continuous skin — standing-seam does both elegantly
- Long-horizon owners — institutions and families planning to hold a building for decades
Where it is usually the wrong call: a budget-led commercial shell, a fast turnaround speculative building, or a client who wants a fixed unchanging colour. For those a coated ACP or another panel is the sensible answer, and our cladding types comparison lays out the alternatives side by side.
Metal and Fire — the Straight Answer
Both zinc and copper are non-combustible metals. On the reaction-to-fire question they sit with the mineral systems, not with the combustible faces — which is why metal façades are appropriate on tall and occupied buildings where unrated HPL or timber would not be. As with any system, the whole façade — metal, sub-frame, insulation and cavity — is engineered and, where the building’s height and use require it, classified to EN 13501-1. The metal being non-combustible is a strong start, but the assembly is what gets specified and signed off.
Performance, Verified Properly
A metal rainscreen is engineered against the same façade-performance benchmarks as any other system:
- ASTM E283 — air leakage of the assembly
- ASTM E331 — water penetration under static pressure
- ASTM E330 — structural performance under wind load
- EN 13501-1 — reaction-to-fire classification where required
