A bank façade has to project the one thing a bank sells — permanence. It must read as solid, prestige and trustworthy from the street, satisfy a fire and compliance standard appropriate to an occupied financial landmark, and hold that prestige finish through Accra sun, coastal salt and humidity for decades without looking dated. Airport City is where Ghana’s bank and finance towers cluster, and the façade decision there is taken in order — fire requirement first, exposure second, then look and budget. Prestige and a permanent face
A bank is judged on gravity. The entrance and the lower elevations in particular want a material with real depth and permanence — natural stone — while the tower above carries a dense, precise, brand-grade finish. The look has to say the institution will be here in thirty years.
Fire safety on an occupied landmark
A finance tower is occupied and tall, so the façade must meet its reaction-to-fire class under EN 13501-1. A non-combustible or A2-s1,d0 (limited-combustibility) façade is the expected baseline, named in writing — which rules out a PE-core ACP at the outset.
Low maintenance on a flagship
A bank cannot look neglected. A ventilated rainscreen from a stable face material sheds heat and moisture, protects the wall behind, and needs little more than washing — keeping a flagship presentation-ready year after year.
Weathering and colour retention
Accra’s sun and coastal salt punish weak finishes. The inherent colour-stability of stone and porcelain, and PVDF/FEVE coatings on any metal face, hold the building’s prestige appearance through its life.
Choosing the Right Cladding System for Banking
The banking shortlist is built for permanence and compliance:
- Natural stone veneer — real granite, limestone or sandstone, with a depth and permanence no manufactured face matches; inherently non-combustible and the prestige finish for bank entrances and lower elevations.
- Porcelain / ceramic ventilated façade — inherently non-combustible to EN 14411, dense, fade-resistant and low-maintenance; a premium institutional finish from stone-effect to flat colour across the tower.
- A2-core ACP — where a flat, precise, brand-coloured tower elevation is wanted, an A2-core composite is classified A2-s1,d0 (limited combustibility).
A PE-core ACP is ruled out, and unrated HPL or timber is kept to soffits and accents only. The choice within the shortlist is made on appearance, service life and relative cost — decided on value over the building life, not the lowest sheet price.
