Why Government Buildings Specify Cladding Ghana
A ministry, a state agency or a civic building does not choose a façade the way a retail unit does. The exterior of a government building is read as a statement of permanence and authority — it must look the part on handover day and still look the part thirty years on, through Accra’s sun, coastal salt and humidity. Cladding Ghana has specified and installed façade systems across Ghana since 1983, and we are deliberately system-agnostic: our job is to put the right cladding on the building, name its fire class in writing, and tell you the honest trade-offs before anything is ordered.
Government work also carries a documentation and life-safety obligation that ordinary commercial work does not. The reaction-to-fire class of the façade is not a finish decision, it is a life-safety decision — and on an occupied institutional building it is settled before look or budget. That is exactly the order in which we specify.
What Government Façades Demand
Gravitas that lasts decades
A civic façade has to carry institutional weight without re-cladding mid-life. That rules out anything that fades, chalks or warps early in Accra’s climate and rewards stable, fade-resistant face materials on a ventilated cavity — porcelain, terracotta, natural stone veneer and A2-core ACP all hold their register across the building’s service life.
Security and robustness
Entrances, perimeter walls and ground-floor zones on government buildings take more scrutiny and more impact than a typical commercial façade. A robust, non-combustible substrate with a properly engineered sub-frame and concealed undercut-anchor fixings gives a hard-wearing, tamper-resistant face rather than a thin sheet that dents.
A non-combustible default
On a tall or occupied institutional building the combustible options — PE-core ACP (the Grenfell material), unrated HPL and timber — are ruled out before the look is even discussed. The default for government work is a non-combustible mineral system or an A2-s1,d0 ACP, named in the specification.
Choosing the Right Cladding System for Government Buildings
Substrate selection
The substrate is the decision. For a ministerial entrance or ceremonial frontage where prestige and permanence matter most, natural stone veneer carries a depth no manufactured face matches. Where a clean institutional finish and very low maintenance are wanted, a porcelain or ceramic ventilated façade to EN 14411 shrugs off sun and salt. For long civic elevations on a controlled budget, fibre-cement rainscreen gives a calm, non-combustible workhorse. Where a flat modern corporate look suits — agency offices, annexes — an A2-core ACP combines fire performance with a stable coated finish. Each is hung on a ventilated cavity so heat and moisture are shed away from the wall behind.
