Choosing Cladding for Ghana's Tropical Climate

Accra's heat, UV, humidity, coastal salt and heavy rain punish the wrong façade. How to choose a cladding system that lasts in the tropics — and why a ventilated rainscreen is the climate answer.

The Climate Is the Hardest Test a Façade Faces

A cladding system in Accra works in one of the most demanding façade environments anywhere: intense equatorial UV, sustained high humidity, salt-laden coastal air, and rain that arrives in heavy, driving bursts. A façade specified for a temperate climate can fade, corrode, trap moisture or fail at its fixings here in a fraction of its rated life. Choosing for the tropics is not the same decision as choosing for fire or for look — it is its own test, and the building that gets it right is re-clad far less often.

The Four Climate Loads

UV and Heat

Equatorial sun degrades unstable surfaces and fades weak coatings. The defence is a fade-resistant face — porcelain and ceramic are inherently colour-stable, fibre-cement holds a matt finish well, and a quality coated metal (PVDF/FEVE) resists fading far better than a basic finish. A back-ventilated cavity also sheds solar heat before it reaches the wall.

Humidity and Trapped Moisture

Sustained humidity is a slow attacker. A sealed, unventilated build-up can trap moisture against the wall, where it feeds mould and degrades insulation. The answer is ventilation — a cavity that lets the wall breathe and dries quickly after rain.

Coastal Salt

Near the coast, salt-laden air accelerates corrosion of unprotected metal and fixings. This makes the sub-frame and fixing specification as important as the panel — stainless or properly coated carriers and fasteners, not bare steel.

Driving Rain

Tropical rain arrives hard and at an angle. A face-sealed system relies entirely on its joints staying perfect forever, which they do not. A drained, ventilated rainscreen instead expects some water past the face and manages it in the cavity.

Why the Ventilated Rainscreen Wins in the Tropics

The single most important climate decision is not the panel — it is the cavity behind it. A ventilated rainscreen hangs the face material on a sub-frame with an air gap behind, and that gap does the heavy lifting:

  • It drains. Any rain that gets past the open joints runs down the back of the panel and out, instead of soaking the wall.
  • It ventilates. Moving air dries the cavity after rain and stops humidity building against the structure.
  • It sheds heat. The cavity carries solar heat up and out before it loads the wall, easing the cooling demand inside.
  • It protects the wall. The structure stays dry and cool behind the rainscreen, which extends its life.
