Porcelain vs ACP vs HPL Cladding Compared
The Problem: Three Materials That Look the Same and Aren’t
If you have collected façade quotes in Accra, three names keep coming up: porcelain ventilated tile, ACP (aluminium composite panel), and HPL (high-pressure laminate). From the street they can all look like a clean, flat, modern panel. But they sit in completely different places on fire safety, durability and cost — and choosing on appearance alone is how the wrong one ends up on the wrong building.

Porcelain Ventilated Façade
Large-format porcelain tiles hung on a ventilated sub-frame, made to EN 14411 (the ceramic/porcelain tile standard).
- Fire: Inherently non-combustible — the safest of the three by a clear margin.
- Durability: Very high. Fade-resistant, dimensionally stable, shrugs off Accra sun, salt and humidity with minimal maintenance.
- Look: Stone-effect to flat colour, a premium institutional finish.
- Cost: Mid-to-high; the panels need careful handling and skilled fixing.
- Best for: Institutional buildings, banks, hospitals, premium façades where durability and fire matter most.

ACP / ACM (Aluminium Composite Panel)
Two thin aluminium skins bonded to a core, in flat panels in almost any colour. The core decides everything on fire.
- Fire: Core-dependent. A PE (polyethylene) core is combustible — the material involved in the Grenfell Tower fire. An FR core is fire-retardant (~70% mineral). An A2 core (>90% mineral) reaches A2-s1,d0 (limited combustibility) under EN 13501-1 — the highest an ACP achieves.
- Durability: High with a quality PVDF coating; good UV and salt resistance.
- Look: Flat, modern, corporate — any RAL or anodised finish.
- Cost: Lower-to-mid, depending on the core.
- Best for: Commercial towers and corporate façades — with the core named to the building.
The One Rule on ACP
Never accept an ACP quote without a named core. On a tall or occupied building a PE core is the wrong answer before anything else. Insist on FR or A2 and see it written into the specification.
HPL (High-Pressure Laminate)
Compressed resin-impregnated layers forming a tough, decorative panel.
- Fire: Standard HPL is combustible; a fire-retardant grade exists and must be specified, with the reaction-to-fire class named, for any tall or occupied building.
- Durability: Good. Tough and weatherable, though not in porcelain’s class for permanence.
- Look: The widest design range of the three — colours, wood-effects and patterns.
- Cost: Lower-to-mid; good value.
- Best for: Low-rise, balconies, soffits and decorative accents where its look earns its place.

(Fire is the material’s reaction-to-fire; the whole façade is engineered and water/wind-tested to ASTM E283 / E331 / E330 and, where required, classified to EN 13501-1.)
How to Choose Between Them
Decide in order, not on looks:
- Fire first. On a tall or occupied building, that already removes PE-core ACP and unrated HPL. Porcelain or an A2-ACP lead.
- Durability and climate second. Porcelain wins on permanence in Accra’s sun and salt; A2-ACP is strong with a good coating.
- Look and budget last. HPL earns its place on low-rise and accents where its design range matters and the fire requirement is modest.
