Choosing Cladding for a School or Campus in Ghana
A Façade That Has to Take a Beating
Educational buildings are one of the most demanding briefs we take on, and not for the reasons people expect. A school or campus façade has to survive years of contact with children, the full force of Accra’s sun, long holiday periods when nobody is maintaining anything, and a budget that is almost always fixed and accountable to a board or a ministry. And after all that, it still has to look welcoming, because the building is part of how the institution presents itself to parents.
That combination — durable, low-maintenance, fairly priced, and warm in appearance — is a genuine engineering and value problem. This article is how we think it through for schools, universities and training campuses across Ghana.
What a School Building Really Needs
When we walk an educational project, these are the priorities that shape the specification:
Impact and abuse resistance
Lower-level façades on a school take knocks that a corporate tower never sees. The face material at ground and first-floor level has to be tough — dents, scuffs and the occasional football are part of the brief, not an exception.
Low and predictable maintenance
Schools are maintained in bursts, usually during holidays, often with limited budgets. A façade that needs regular attention is the wrong façade. We specify materials that stay looking right with very little intervention.
Honest, accountable cost
Educational budgets are scrutinised. The right system is the one that delivers durability and a decent appearance at a cost the institution can defend — value across the building’s life, not the lowest sheet price and not a prestige finish the school is paying for unnecessarily.
A welcoming, human appearance
A campus should not look like a warehouse. Colour, warmth and a sense of care matter, because the building is part of the institution’s identity to students and parents alike.
Why HPL and Fibre-Cement So Often Win
For most educational buildings in Ghana, the shortlist comes down to two systems — and there are good reasons for that.
High-pressure laminate (HPL)
HPL is compressed resin-impregnated panels with the widest range of colours, wood-effects and patterns in the whole catalogue. For a school that wants a warm, friendly, characterful façade, nothing matches its design flexibility — and it is light and good value. It is genuinely well suited to education, which is why it appears so often on campuses. Our HPL cladding service covers the full range.
The fire caveat is real and we will not gloss over it: standard HPL is combustible. For any taller or more occupied educational building, a fire-retardant grade must be specified and the reaction-to-fire class named under EN 13501-1. HPL is at its best on low-rise blocks, balconies, soffits and decorative accents — exactly the places a campus uses it. On a tall, heavily occupied building it must be either the rated grade in an engineered system, or a non-combustible material instead.
Fibre-cement
Where the building is taller or the fire requirement is stricter, fibre-cement is often the better answer. It is non-combustible, durable, low-maintenance, and comes in a calm matt finish from flat colour to wood-grain. It does the same welcoming-but-tough job as HPL without the combustibility question, which is why so many institutional and educational façades use it. It is heavier than HPL and benefits from a ventilated cavity in our climate.

Fire Comes First on an Occupied Building
A school is an occupied building full of people who may not evacuate quickly, so the reaction-to-fire decision is not a finish question — it is a life-safety one, and it is decided before look or budget. The rule we apply is simple and we apply it every time: the taller and more occupied the building, the higher the fire bar. On a tall school block a combustible unrated face is ruled out before anything else is discussed. We classify the material and the whole assembly to EN 13501-1 and name the class in writing. No school façade leaves our specification with the fire question left vague.
How the System Is Verified
Beyond fire, an educational façade is engineered against the same performance benchmarks as any other:
- ASTM E283 — air leakage of the assembly
- ASTM E331 — water penetration under static pressure
- ASTM E330 — structural performance under wind load
- EN 13501-1 — reaction-to-fire classification
