The Problem: A Façade That Has to Survive Accra

The cladding question in Ghana is not really “which panel looks best.” It is “which façade will still look right after ten years of Accra sun, coastal salt-laden air, the harmattan, and the long humid months.” A finish that photographs beautifully on a sample board can fade, chalk, streak or warp on a real building if it was chosen for the showroom and not for the climate. So the honest starting point is exposure — what this specific wall will live through — not the picture in the brochure.

Why the Cavity Matters as Much as the Panel

The single most important lesson is that a ventilated rainscreen — panels hung on a sub-frame with a continuous air gap behind them — outperforms a panel stuck flat to the wall in this climate. The cavity sheds heat before it reaches the structure, lets any water that gets behind the face drain and dry, and keeps the wall cooler and drier. In Accra, the cavity is not a luxury. It is the difference between a façade that breathes and one that bakes.

The Systems That Hold Up Here

No single material wins everywhere, but these earn their place in Ghana’s climate:

Porcelain & Ceramic Ventilated Façades

Large-format porcelain tiles on a ventilated sub-frame are about as climate-proof as cladding gets here. They are non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and fade-resistant — porcelain shrugs off UV, salt and humidity with almost no maintenance. A premium institutional finish that lasts. Fibre-Cement

A robust, non-combustible workhorse with a calm matt finish, fibre-cement is strong value for schools, residences and institutional walls — provided it is run as a ventilated cavity in this climate so the board stays dry. More on Fibre-Cement Cladding.

A2-Core Aluminium Composite (ACP)

Where a flat modern corporate look is wanted, an A2-core ACP with a quality PVDF coating handles UV and salt well and gives the highest fire class an aluminium composite reaches. The core must be named — a PE core is the wrong answer on a tall building for fire reasons before climate even enters.

Natural Stone Veneer

Real stone is inherently non-combustible and effectively permanent in this climate — the prestige answer for banks and hotels. See Stone Veneer Cladding.

Honest Advice on What to Avoid

The relevant performance is the coating’s weathering and colour retention (PVDF/FEVE finishes), the system’s water and wind tightness (tested to ASTM E283 / E331 / E330), and the reaction-to-fire class (EN 13501-1). We name these in the specification rather than leaving them to chance.

What It Costs — Honestly

A durable ventilated system costs more per square metre at install than a flat-stuck panel. But a façade that is rarely re-clad usually beats a lower-priced one that fades or fails early, once you count the cost over the building’s life.
